Cops ‘n’ Robbers Megaways: Slot Overview

Cops ‘n’ Robbers first cropped up back in 2013 and proved so successful, developer Greentube released a couple of online versions to ride the original’s coattails. Alongside older titles such as Cops ‘n’ Robbers Millionaires Row and a couple of Vegas tie-ins, a modern Megaways version has rolled off Inspired Gaming’s production line. We say modern, yet Inspired reignites nostalgic yearnings by giving Cops ‘n’ Robbers Megaways a look that recaptures an earlier, some might say, simpler time.

The Megaways game mechanic, on license from BTG, expands the older game’s play area, by giving it 6 main reels holding up to 7 symbols each, and a top horizontal reel holding 4 symbols. Every time the reels spin, a different number of symbols lands, providing a varying number of win ways, up to 117,649 at the most. The rest of the view recreates a familiar skyline image; this time afforded a lot more room despite the grid containing extra rows and reels. Inspired has walked a fine line between over-modernising and being old-fashioned that should satisfy fans of the first as well as players brand new to the Cops ‘n’ Robbers range.

Opening up the stake menu provides a set of bets that should suit most but the highest rollers with options from 20 p/c to $/€20 per spin. Players can expect a more volatile experience this time around, moving from a medium setting into medium/high territory. Return value varies, depending on the bonus selection, cycling the figure between 95.19% to 95.50%.

Base game rules are standard Megaways stuff, so 3 matching symbols from the leftmost reel trigger a win – except the logo symbol, which pays out for a two-of-a-kind hit. If 6 logos line up, the payout value is worth 50x your stake. Moving down, we find a cop symbol, a bag of cash, a bundle of cash, and a cop car making up the premium symbols. Interesting to see the judge and the lady symbol have been dropped. From there are 10-A card symbols making up the low pays. Appearing on the bonus reel is a bulldog wild symbol, replacing all symbols except the bonus scatter. When free spins are triggered, wild symbols may appear on the main reels.

Cops ‘n’ Robbers Megaways: Slot Features

Each win in the base or bonus games triggers the cascade feature, which pops winning combinations off the reels. This allows new or remaining symbols to cascade down, potentially creating repeat win sequences.

Keep one eye on the police lamp at the top right of the reels. Every so often, it flashes blue or red to award one of 2 modifiers. If blue, a random number of mystery symbols are added to the reels before they stop spinning. Mystery symbols may turn into any of the regular pay symbols.

If the light flashes red, the Red Reels modifier starts, and an increasing number of Megaways-spins starts (up to its set limit). A robber appears and moves across the screen below the reels if a crossing light randomly turns green. If he reaches the right-hand side, scatter symbols are added to the reels to guarantee a bonus trigger. Red Reels end if the maximum ways are reached, or a win greater than 5x occurs, or a bonus is triggered. Red Reel spins are paid games, so changing the bet level does not carry them over, but they are saved should you return.

The free spins gamble feature activates when a win of 5x or above occurs. Players can either collect the win, or gamble it to increase the amount, or win free spins. The gamble takes place on a wheel with red and green segments – land on green to win.

During the base game, 3 or more scatters anywhere in view awards a bonus game, of which there are 2 choices:

  • One pick is free spins, where you get 8 for 3 triggering scatters +2 more spins for additional scatters up to a maximum of 78. Each winning cascade in free spins increases an unlimited win multiplier by +1. Also, Bonzo, the walking wild dog, may wake up and start wandering across the top reel, moving one position per spin. If a wild symbol lands directly below Bonzo, then all symbols on the reel become wild.
  • The second bonus is The Chase. Red dice move Bert the Robber around a board, collecting cash in each square he stops on. A snooze count starts at 3, increasing by +1 when scatters land or decreasing by 1 whenever Bert moves. When it reaches zero, the cop wakes up and chases Bert using rolls of the blue dice. When Bert is finally caught, he enters the ID parade, where players are awarded their winnings, or the board values increase and the chase starts again, or extra compensation is awarded, followed by the player continuing the bonus. Landing on the bottom left square multipliers the accumulated earnings by up to x5.

Cops ‘n’ Robbers Megaways: Slot Verdict

Cops‘ n’ Robbers Megaways packs in way more features than we usually come across in one game. If you like feature-rich slots, as they call them, Cops ‘n’ Robbers Megaways is one to consider. It’ll fit better if you like a retro touch to your gaming, while fans of the original should be over the moon with the Megaways upgrade. Inspired has kept the slapstick antics of the first and some of the features while utilising BTG’s game engine to expand nearly everything.

It might not have the bright white reels of the first one, but Cops n’ Robbers Megaways does feel old-school, including its Top Cat-Esque royal symbols. So much so that if you weren’t there for the first, Cops ‘n’ Robbers Megaways’ visuals might not do it for you. On the other hand, Megaways provides much of the action, so the gameplay feels contemporary. Alongside the standard set of cascades, free spins and progressive multipliers are loads of extras unique to Cops ‘n’ Robbers.

One area of concern could be the RTP if you don’t manage to fulfil the best strategy recommendations laid out in the paytable. Max win stat wasn’t available, but payouts are limited to $250,000 though not every stake will be able to reach that target.

Well, toss another classic Megaways upgrade on the conversion pile, which is getting bigger on a weekly basis. What makes Cops ‘n’ Robbers Megaways stick out is it feels like a bit of love went into designing it. Inspired could have stuck with the standard Megaways extras to power Bert and the Copper’s escapades, but instead, there are features ahoy, making the game a fun, old meets new fusion.

Good

Cops ‘n’ Robbers Megaways recaptures the light-hearted gaming of the original while being stuffed with features like a swag bag of ill-gotten gains.
